When visiting Paris, we immediately think of the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, or Parisian cafés. But after a few days in the capital, we might want to discover another side of France, one that is calmer, more elegant, and deeply rooted in the country's history.

If you're looking for a place to visit for a day or a weekend, our current favorite destination is undoubtedly the Château de Chantilly.

Located just 50 kilometers north of Paris, this exceptional place offers a blend of historical heritage, majestic gardens, art, gastronomy, and equestrian tradition. Easily accessible by train from Paris, Chantilly is one of the most beautiful day trips to take outside the capital.

A Castle Steeped in History

The Château de Chantilly is much more than just a castle. It is a true symbol of French history.

Rebuilt in the 19th century on the foundations of an old medieval fortress, the estate has belonged to several prominent French families, notably the Princes of Condé. Today, it impresses as much with its exterior elegance as with the richness of its interior collections.

The castle harmoniously blends medieval and Renaissance influences, creating an atmosphere that is both romantic and majestic.

With its moat, grand towers, and refined facades, the Château de Chantilly almost resembles a film set.

An exceptional art gallery

One of the château's most impressive treasures is undoubtedly the Musée Condé, located within the grounds. It houses one of the largest collections of Old Master paintings in France after the Louvre, featuring works by renowned masters such as Raphael, Poussin, and Delacroix.

Each room is decorated to tell the story of the French aristocracy and European art, giving visitors the feeling of traveling back in time.

The magnificent French-style gardens

The Chantilly estate is also famous for its exceptional gardens.

Designed in part by André Le Nôtre—the renowned gardener of the Palace of Versailles—the French formal gardens offer stunning vistas, elegant pools, and perfectly laid-out pathways.

But what makes Chantilly particularly appealing is the blend of several garden styles:

• The highly symmetrical and elegant French formal gardens,

• The more natural and romantic English garden,

• And the hamlet, a rustic space that is said to have inspired Marie Antoinette for her famous Hamlet of Versailles.

It's the perfect place for a leisurely stroll, a picnic, or simply to enjoy a moment away from the hustle and bustle of Paris.

Chantilly, the horse capital

It's impossible to talk about Chantilly without mentioning its strong equestrian tradition.

The town is world-renowned for its horse racing heritage and regularly hosts major horse races at the Chantilly Racecourse.

The estate also boasts the famous Great Stables, considered the finest princely stables in Europe. Today, they house the Living Museum of the Horse as well as impressive equestrian shows.

Why we recommend Chantilly

The Château de Chantilly is a destination that embodies everything we love about French getaways:

• history,

• architecture,

• magnificent gardens,

• art,

• gastronomy,

• and a typically French, elegant atmosphere.

Whether you're a culture enthusiast, a photography lover, or simply looking for a beautiful day out from Paris, Chantilly is a destination not to be missed.

So, during your next trip to France, take some time to escape Paris… and let yourself be captivated by the charm of the Château de Chantilly.
